"Many careers end in success.....
A few begin with it."
Some of the most important moments in your career can be the moments you stand up to present your ideas to your colleagues. As Roger Ailes implied in the title of his book, " You are the Message" (Dow-Jones Irwin, 1988), audiences associate the quality of your presentation technique with the quality of your ideas and your very identity as a professional. Excellent technique not only helps achieve your purposes, but also enhances your professional credibility and self-esteem.
Communication is both universal and specific. Clear communication depends on clear purposes, careful attention to message, and thorough awareness of the audience. Therefore, I pose this to you: When writing your manuscript, keep focused on its salient features and remember that an excess of meaningless information challenges the reader's attention span and requires more time to acquire a take-home message. Concentrating on significant information can easily reduce a full page to a half page without losing a single relevant fact. This is especially important when considering the introduction and discussion sections of your manuscript.
Leading and attending conferences, writing scientific papers and giving presentations are some of the most important communication activities in our profession. As a professional, you can greatly enhance your own success by improving your skills in these areas. Looking forward to meeting you in the next conference....
