The 8 th International meeting of the Asian Pacific Society of Periodontology was held in Singapore on 29-30 August 2009, immediately preceding the 2009 FDI Annual World Dental Congress. Over 170 delegates attended the APSP meeting which had as its theme "Periodontology: Beyond the Pocket". The meeting was opened by Dr Hui Chee Wah, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee. The two-day program was very full, with 19 presentations from speakers from 14 different countries. In addition, 29 posters were scheduled for presentation.[Additional file 1]

The poster sessions were very successful and in keeping with tradition from previous meetings three prizes were awarded for the posted judged to be the best on the day. The winners of the poster competition (which included a cash award) were:
First place
Tomoko Hashikawa (Osaka University, Japan) Periodontal regeneration by transplantation of human adipose tissue derived stem cells
Second place
Chung Chit Hang (University of Hong Kong) Medium to long-term soft tissue health around osseointegrated titanium dental implants
Third place
Tomohiko Makino (Tsurumi University, Japan) The effects of full mouth SRP in conjunction with Azithromycin for peri-implantitis
