Periodontology is a continuously evolving field. The concept of evidence based practice has been accepted on a large scale for the same reason. Consequently, research in our field, or any field for that matter, has gained a lot of emphasis in the recent years. The lessons imbibed from these research activities will eventually enhance the quality of care given to our patients, which is the ultimate outcome that we hope for. This is precisely the reason why we need to make more efforts to bring in the concept of “RESEARCH” at the undergraduate level.

By introducing research into the curriculum, we are giving our students the opportunity to become competent and responsible professionals of integrity. They develop a motivation to learn and understand that all affirmations require supporting evidence which also develop their self confidence as a health care professional.

Incorporation of research methodology at the undergraduate level can lead development of independent critical thinking skills as well as oral and written communication skills. This will also help the students to develop interest in the specific subject.

So what is stopping us from providing these opportunities to our students? In most scenarios, funding is the major concern. Many a times the students are not willing to spend their money on a project which is not a mandatory requirement towards the completion of their course. They are too naïve to understand the benefits of this program at that juncture. Hence its can be suggested that the universities arrange some kind of a fund for research purposes so that more students are encouraged to conduct research activities. Furthermore, this will also benefit the university or institution as it can lead to publications in esteemed journals and local, regional, national, or international presentations that will increase the standards of the university in the scientific community.

The installation of research methodology at the undergraduate level will also benefit the faculty members to a great extend. They will be able to conduct good research with the help of the students, while in a teaching institution, and, at the same time enhance their teaching interactions with the students through the use of the scientific process of research as a class objective. This will facilitate the students to have a practical approach to their subject which will further solidify their learning experience. It is imperative to train professionals who are capable of formulating clinically relevant hypothesis to guide their actions and not just blindly implement clinical services from the theoretical aspect.

Hence I urge all the Institution heads to incorporate scientific research activities as an integral part of the undergraduate studies. Equipped with this basic tool, our students will be able to critically evaluate scientific data and increase their analysis capacity for treatment planning, thereby improving the patient care.

We should aspire to pursue opportunities to improve the quality of education provided to our students with the hope that this will enrich the research experience as well as learning experience for our students.

Let me also take this opportunity to welcome you all to the various scientific events planned by ISP in the year 2019. Seeking your valuable support and active participation for the same.
