We are living in an age of knowledge explosion. In every branch of science things are changing with leaps and bounds. What is in vogue today will be obsolete in couple of years. The field of health science is no exception to this rule.

Art and science of dentistry is constantly changing, broadening the knowledge of etiopathogenesis of oral diseases, development of new diagnostic tools and introducing new therapeutic modalities. In these days of competition and evidence based practice it becomes mandatory for a clinician to keep abreast with new developments to continue in the profession. This calls for lifelong learning. To meet this challenge it has become necessary to train the students in self directed learning.

Self directed learning is described as a process by which an individual takes initiative with or without assistance from others, realizing learning needs, formulating learning, goals, identify human and material resources of learning, choosing and implementing appropriate learning methodology.

In recent years medical education is undergoing paradigm change. More emphasize is placed on Problem Based Learning [PBL] and Self Directed Learning [SDL]. Many universities around the world have introduced SDL in their curriculum to prepare the students for their future. However in our country no concrete steps have been taken in this direction.

Indian Society of Periodontology [ISP] is known in the country for its pioneering ideas and novel programs. As a President, I feel that ISP should take necessary steps to introduce SDL in UG and PG courses in the curricula and be a leader in dental education. It's my suggestion to the periodontists and dental academicians to deliberate on this important topic and to take effective decision to implement it.

Jai ISP
