It always seems impossible until it's done”

-Nelson Mandela (1918-2013)

As I enter my second term as the Editor of the prestigious Journal of Indian Society of Periodontology, I would like to thank you, for your reposing your confidence in me. It would be foolish, however, if we rested on our laurels. We cannot be complacent; we must seek ways to continuously improve JISP and our discipline as a whole. On one hand, it is my responsibility to try to balance quality and standard, acceptance and submission rates so that the journal survives and excels. On the other hand, it is our collective responsibility as academicians/researchers/clinicians/students in our discipline to ensure our journal improves. As authors, we need to ensure that the manuscripts we submit meet reasonable quality standards. As reviewers, we need to take care that the expectations we have of our colleagues papers are reasonable.

I think our discipline is slowly but surely maturing. Considering the number of dental colleges offering post-graduation in our discipline, ideally we should have more researchers doing better research, and we should be generating more high-quality research. For instance, it is my opinion that our post graduates are better trained as researchers now than many of us were, say, 20 years ago. Moreover, with advances in software and computer technology, they should be capable of doing better, faster research. For instance, consider the support now provided by technological advancements for both qualitative and quantitative research vs the support provided, say, 20 years ago.

If you are invited to revise a paper for JISP, it indicates that you have a fairly good chance of ultimately having your paper accepted. But if you decide to resubmit a paper, it is important to fully undertake the revisions. If you commit yourself to the job, your chances of having your paper ultimately published are good, although clearly there are no guaranties. It is disheartening, therefore, when authors fail to revise and resubmit their papers when they have been so asked. Apart from the time that has been wasted on the review process, authors give up an opportunity to have their paper published. My message is loud and clear… If you receive an invitation from the editorial office to revise and resubmit your paper, do not hesitate! Commit to undertaking a good quality revision, respond to all the reviewers concerns, and commit to resubmitting your paper within a reasonable period of time.

We at the editorial office rely on the support and goodwill of many of you for our activities to work effectively and efficiently. We are fortunate to have a national and an international editorial board, which, together with our reviewers, gives the journal an international outreach. The combined expertise of our board members and reviewers allows the journal to keep up to date with high impact science globally. From time to time, however, we make mistakes. Please be understanding of (I hope) the occasional problem you encounter with us, but also please help us by giving your feedback when a problem occurs. Do not assume that we should know about the problem. We might, but then again we might not! On the other hand, if you are pleased with our review processes, we would also welcome your positive feedback. Our publication staff, editorial board members, reviewers, and, of course me included, always appreciate hearing about a job well done!!

Warm festive greetings and have a great year ahead!!!!
