Tehmi Canteenwalla was born in Bombay on 1 March 1918. She was united in wedlock to Dr. Minoo Sorabji Ginwalla, an Oral Surgeon, in 1943 and they had a son and twins - a girl and a boy.

Dr. (Mrs.) T. M. S. Ginwalla had many "firsts" to her credit.

  • She was the first lady from India to earn a Doctorate in Dental Surgery from abroad (Toronto, Canada) in 1942 and Licentiate in Dental Surgery from Royal College of Surgeons, Canada.
  • "Madam," as she was fondly known, pioneered the first independent Department of Periodontology in Nair Hospital Dental College, Bombay, in August 1947. She headed the department from 1947 till she retired from service in 1976.
  • She initiated postgraduation in the subject of Periodontology in Nair Hospital Dental College, Bombay, in 1959 and was a recognized postgraduate teacher in the subject of Periodontology, University of Bombay. She was invited as External Examiner for undergraduate and postgraduate examinations to various universities in India.
  • Madam Ginwalla had the honor of being the first lady to be elected Dean, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Bombay (1963-1964).
  • Dr. Ginwalla was the first Dental Scientist from across the globe to be invited to the V International Conference on Oral Biology held in Zurich in 1971 to present an original contribution on "Beta glucuronidase and periodontal destruction."
  • She was the first lady in dental history of India to be appointed officiating Dean of Nair Hospital Dental College, Bombay, from June 1973 to July 1974.
  • She was unanimously elected the first President of Indian Society of Periodontology in 1975-1976.

Dr. (Mrs.) Ginwalla was awarded a gold medal for the first Dr. Ahmed Memorial Oration under the auspices of Indian Dental Association. The Dental Council of India had appointed her to inspect many dental schools in India. She had a number of scientific obligations in professional national and international journals. Among the other leading women of most countries, Mrs. Ginwalla's name was listed on page 436 in the book, "World's Who's Who of Women," 2 nd Edition, 1974-1975, published by Melrose Press Limited, Cambridge, England. Dr. Ginwalla was a multifaceted person. Classical music and dance, badminton, and athletics were some of her likes. Slim and tall with shiny, silver gray hair, sari-clad with high-heeled shoes, diamond-studded earrings and finger rings - Mrs. Ginwalla was a picture of elegance. Kind and gentle, she helped students solve their problems including financial difficulties. She guided the destinies of her students and a large number of them occupied prominent positions in their respective colleges all over the country and overseas. Dr. Tehmi Ginwalla was called to her heavenly abode on 6 December 1985.
