   Meeting Report Top


The 8 th International meeting of the Asian Pacific Society of Periodontology was held in Singapore on 29-30 August 2009, immediately preceding the 2009 FDI Annual World Dental Congress. Over 170 delegates attended the APSP meeting which had as its theme "Periodontology: Beyond the Pocket". The meeting was opened by Dr Hui Chee Wah, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee. The two-day program was very full, with 19 presentations from speakers from 14 different countries. In addition, 29 posters were scheduled for presentation.[Additional file 1]

N Laosrisin (Thailand) - Ultrasonic device: Mission possible on subgingival debridement

K Gomi (Japan) -Changing flora is changing pocket

Y Soeroso (Indonesia) - The periodontal problem related to systemic diseases in Health Service Centres in Indonesia

J-C Zhang (China) - The preliminary study on the common genetic risk factors between periodontitis and diabetes

M Tan (Philippines) - Clinical periodontal practice: The Philippine scenario

L Jin (Hong Kong) - Periodontal screening and management: The foundation of general dental practice

PM Bartold (Australia) - Periodontal systemic interrelationships - An overview of the evidence

T Van Dyke (United States of America) - Management of inflammation in periodontal disease: The future of periodontal therapy

S Ciancio (United States of America) - Periodontal advances: Impact on practice

I Ishikawa (Japan) - Periodontal regeneration based on cell sheet engineering

NP Lang (Hong Kong) - How do patient data affect treatment planning and prognosis

R Burkhardt (Switzerland) - Esthetic risk factors in plastic periodontal and periimplant surgery

EF Corbet (Hong Kong) - Periodontics: Beyond the pocket and now totally lost

H Lee (Singapore) - Immediate loading of implants in fully edentulous arches: A private practice experience

WC Tan (Singapore) - Sinus floor elevations: How the available evidence translates into clinical practice

R Longbottom (New Zealand) - Perioscopy: Ten years of experience using the dental endoscope. A periodontist's perspective

TB Taiyeb-Ali (Malaysia) - Evaluation of root coverage with autogenous connective tissue and acellular dermal matrix grafts

CK Kim (Korea) - Application of BMP and GDF-5 for periodontal regeneration: An experimental histological observation [Additional file 2]

N Surathu (India) - Periodontal intervention in the enhancement of restorative results in fixed prosthodontics and implant dentistry

The poster sessions were very successful and in keeping with tradition from previous meetings three prizes were awarded for the posted judged to be the best on the day. The winners of the poster competition (which included a cash award) were:

First place

Tomoko Hashikawa (Osaka University, Japan) Periodontal regeneration by transplantation of human adipose tissue derived stem cells

Second place

Chung Chit Hang (University of Hong Kong) Medium to long-term soft tissue health around osseointegrated titanium dental implants

Third place

Tomohiko Makino (Tsurumi University, Japan) The effects of full mouth SRP in conjunction with Azithromycin for peri-implantitis
